Questions

How do I pick a quilt pattern?

Check the skill level, the techniques and whether your size is included. Tree Farm is a confident beginner pattern that adds half-square triangles. It covers 5 sizes from Baby to King and states the fabric for each.

Is Tree Farm suitable for a beginner?

It is a confident beginner pattern. The blocks use plain squares and half-square triangles. The PDF has a tools and terms glossary, illustrated steps, a checklist and a troubleshooting page for half-square triangles, seam allowances and block sizes.

How many fat quarters do I need for each size?

Baby 42″ × 55½″ needs 6. Throw 55½″ × 69″ needs 10. Twin 69″ × 96″ needs 18. Queen 96″ × 109½″ needs 28. King 109½″ × 109½″ needs 32. Each tree uses one print, and one fat quarter makes up to 2 trees. You also need cream background fabric and brown trunk fabric.

Can I use yardage instead of fat quarters?

Yes. The pattern includes a yardage option of 10 prints.

What is a paper quilt pattern? Is this one?

Tree Farm is not a paper pattern mailed to you. It is a 19-page printable PDF that you download and print yourself.

Will it print on A4 paper, and can I print just one page?

Yes. The PDF comes in US Letter and A4 versions. Fabric, cutting, color maps and shopping lists each print on their own page, so you can print only what you need.

How are the tree blocks made?

Each 12-inch block is a 4x4 grid of 3-inch units: plain squares and 6 half-square triangles for the pointed top and stepped branches, 4 background squares and a 2-square brown trunk. Blocks are set in rows with 1½-inch cream sashing.

Why buy this when there are free Christmas quilt patterns?

For $8.99 you get 5 sizes, a numbered color map and shopping list for each, a coloring page, a glossary, a checklist and troubleshooting, all in large print. Free patterns often leave these out.
